Check out my blog
Cause this section of the site is tremendously out of date! The work section is mostly up-to-date but this section is getting a bit old. Someday I'll replace this area with a real CMS and then maybe I'll be able to update content in some manageable way.

Laid Off Yet Again. Boo.
I was contracting at Macromedia but my department lost some funding and had none designated for me. We're all very sad about it but it's clearly time to move on. I'm not sure yet if I qualify for unemployment but I think I can make February rent.

<hypnosis>You want to give me a job.</hypnosis>

I'm Published in ColdFusion Developer's Journal! Yay!
Look for my article in the April 2003 edition of the ColdFusion Developer's Journal.

Also look for my monkey. I just can't help but put monkeys into technical documentation. Monkeys are irresistible!

I'm the New BACFUG Leader! Yay!
I recently ran in the Bay Area ColdFusion User Group presidential election and won! People say it's a thankless job, but I'm pretty sure I've had worse. I'll be in charge of scheduling the lectures, organizing the meetings, keeping the peace on the mailing list, overseeing the promotions (which will be handled by someone else), and delivering the beer. (Of course, with this bunch, the beer delivery is one of the more important duties.)

I'm still looking for a job, but I have a good bit of contract work right now. Yay! I'm making a living!

I Wrote Part of a ColdFusion Book! Yay!
I wrote two chapters for a ColdFusion 5 Study Guide book, including evil questions and monkey code examples. You can read more about my contribution to the book by clicking Work > Book in the menu.

Congratulations Hans and Amy!
My good friend Hans and his chick-en Amy are getting married and I get to go! Yay! It took some finagling but I finally managed to get a reasonably priced ticket to Baton Rouge. I have only talked to Amy on the phone, so this should be extra cool!

More Job Hunting
It's been a while since the last update. I've been in California for almost a year and I love it here. I have a bunch of coolness new buds, I keep hanging out with this cute guy, and the goth scene here is much sillier than the scene in Louisiana. Some people take themselves way to seriously, but not my new clubbing friends. Next weekend, we're going blacklight bowling. I'm actively looking for a job again. I don't much like working in my house, mostly because my space is so small. I'm just not very good about seeking out contract work, so I'm feeling poorer than ever. I'll be updating content in the next week, so anyone who wants to be added to the monkeys section should let me know. Need coffee NOW!

The Quest BeginsÂ…
I've been in California for about two months and I think it's time I started looking for a new job. I like my job but telecommuting full-time is just not my thing. It would probably be better if I knew more people here and had more to distract me at night but when I'm home I always feel like I'm at work. Besides which, living in Sunnyvale and working for a New Orleans salary is wearing a bit thin.

I feel mightily poor.

It's good that I don't have to be desperate for a job and take whatever comes along. Last night my friend jm.jm. the Space Monkey told me that selling my soul to The Man can be a good thing. "Just look at me--" he said, "I sold my soul for my job and I'm just fine!" I said "You think that your company has only one redeeming quality and that's you." "Ok, you have a point."

On a side note, my tweezers have been tweezernapped. I figured that jm.jm. stole them to keep me from plucking my eyebrows but he claims innocence. Luckily I have a back-up pair of tweezers so I'm not in any danger of having mad scientist eyebrows.

I'm going camping in Yosemite this weekend! It's gonna be fun. I wonder if I should bring bear spray. I'm good at scaring off snakes but I don't know much about scaring off bears. Lions and space monkeys and bears! Oh my!

California
So I finally moved to California. I managed to escape my icky Louisiana allergies and moved into a condo in a complex landscaped in a Louisiana theme. It could be worse. I can even skip my allergy medicine for a full day without ending up in the emergency room. In the spring, even.

My room is small but affordable. It came with a TV set, so the DVD player I left behind was suddenly a useful thing. Luckily my friend jerji formerly of Bent moved out here at about the same time and he was able to fit the DVD player in his car. My roommates are totally non-offensive. That's nice.

I have found more local freaky people and good coffee and fun clubs. Now if I could just catch me a decent man....

I've totally hosed the schedule that I used to have. I now have two things on my schedule:
Wednesday: Poker Night! -- Our favorite game is Follow the Ho Through Chicago at Midnight.
Friday: Invader Zim!

Unfortunately, this means that I'm not learning any weird programming schtuff, but that's just not going to happen right now. Since I feel like I'm always at work, I'd still feel like I'm at work if I tried to learn computer things at night. Once I get a local job and more local friends I'll pick that back up.

Don't mind me
I just set up this database-driven version of my website. When I was finished building the front end I had a big chunk of the "Monkeys" section content done but almost nothing else. I've assigned a priority to the remaining sections and I'll get the important ones online within the next few days. The site frivolousness may take until early February since I won't have any available weekends until then. I'll be out of town the next few weekends and my weekday schedule is pretty packed.

Monday: learn computer schtuff
Tuesday: Goth Moovy Nite
Wednesday: Dinner with the BradHead
Thursday: Writing night (with occasional reading)

I might shave some time off of Monday and Thursday night activities but those nights are important to me That's why I bothered to put them in a schedule.

I suppose I'll get around to making a data-entry tool for this sucker eventually.

The not-so-wild West
It's settled. I'm going to California- not permanently (not now), but definitely going. My ticket has already been purchased. I'm leaving January 24th and coming back the 29th. That's two days to travel and four whole days to hang out with my friends! Of course, most of my friends will be working that Thursday and Friday, but I'm sure I'll find things to do. I guess I'll be spending those days having an anime festival with Tad the Space Kitty.

Since I'll be in town Thursday I'm going to the Bay Area ColdFusion User Group meeting. I hope I don't end up having to navigate there! I'm not good at navigating in San Francisco yet (as evidenced by my last trip). Apparently I am so lost in San Francisco that I make locals get lost. Or maybe I make them stop paying attention to the road. One of those.

you though jm.jm. was all new!
You know, I just realized something. I already knew that I appreciate a bit of chaos in my life and until recently I was trying to figure out how to get that touch of madness back. I thought of many things but they all took time and effort. And *planning*. I mean, what kind of chaos does a person *plan* to bring into her life? *Predictable* chaos. And frankly, that won't do. Chaos just isn't chaos if you can *predict* it. I yearned for chaos, I actively sought chaos to no avail, and what do I do when the chaos I desire breaks into my life of its own free will? I *complain* about it like a spanked school girl who isn't even naughty. But no more. I wanted chaos for a reason. I received chaos-- not because I wanted it but because it wanted me. The benefits of chaos have already begun and if I just stopped complaining about it, the pent up energy could do such greater things. I have channelled chaos through my life into an interesting world. Now I will channel chaos through my life into myself instead. Oh, yes, Boys and Girls-- it's a whole new me and you may never know the difference....
